Member of the Crawford-Stephenson (Stevenson) -Lane clan of Northern Neck, Virginia, and half brother of legendary, western Pennsylvania frontier military legend Col William Crawford.   James Stevenson was born  about 1740 in Berkeley County, Virginia (WV), and died in Cross Creek, Twp., Washington County, 1813, 76 years old. He married Rachel McKeever.  He was the brother of Presley Carr Lane’s father-in-law, Col. Richard Stevenson last of Shelbyville, Kentucky.  Stevenson commanded the 3rd Battalion, Washington County in 1783.  Was granted nearly 800 acres near Cross Creek in 1790.
His sons were James Jr, John, Richard Joseph; dtrs: Achsah, Sara; another son William: 1771-1851, buried at cross creek cemetery; married Margaret Crawford: son, William “Big Bill” Crawford Stevenson, 1802-1865; buried at cross creek .
