Wilson Smith
Biography
1772 -
Originally of Northumberland County, Pa., the Hon. Wilson Smith was born at Mill Creek, Erie Pennsylvania 1772, the son of Revolutionary War veteran Matthew and Agnes Smith. He married Jane Wilson. He was appointed County Surveyor, 1800; County Sheriff, 1803, and Associate Judge of Erie County, 1814. Smith was elected to state House of Representatives, 1805-1807; state Senate, 1809-1813; returned to the House, 1819-1820; unsuccessful attempts at reelection to the Senate, 1829; and twice unsuccessful for return to House, 1825 and 1828. He served as a federal elector for Andrew Jackson, 1832; state quartermaster general at the outset of the War of 1812; third Aide de Camp to the Governor during the same period; and Paymaster of Pennsylvania Militia during Perry’s Erie Campaign.
