Of Mauch Chunk, Abraham Shortz, son of Abraham and Sarah Shortz, was born in Nazareth Township, September 3, 1793. The family moved to Nescopeck township early, and in 1820, to Mauch Chunk.  Abraham emerged as a contractor with the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company, as well as a lumber manufacturer.  He also served in the state House of Representatives, 1840; and the state Senate from Northampton County prior to the erection of Carbon County, 1839-1840;   In 1843, Senator Shortz played a conspicuous part in organizing the new county of “Carbon,” appointed one of the trustees and receivers.  After the county’s adjudication, Abraham served as one of the commissioners, 1850-59, and treasurer, 1845-46, of the county.  He died in Mauch Chunk on August 6, 1876. His wife, Sarah Rothermel Shortz was the sister of famed Pennsylvania painter and master, Peter P. Rothermel, whose "Battle of Gettysburg," which he painted for the state of Pennsylvania, cost twenty-five thousand dollars.
