Born 1755 in Moreland, Philadelphia County, the son of Berne, Switzerland immigrant, Jacob Shearer (Sr.) (mother unknown). Member of the Continental Army during the Revolution, enlisted as a private, served throughout the war; Battle of Germantown; befriended the Marquis nde Lafayette, who was received by Shearer in 1824; member of the state House of Representatives, 1805-1811; elected to the state senate in 1813, serving through 1817; county commissioner; lived at his farm in Bustleton, where he died in 1837, 82 years old. Married three times: Mary Northrop; Sara Northrop (after her sister Mary died); and Rachel de Nyce.
