Born, New Castle, Lawrence County, March 5, 1917, Governor Raymond P. Shafer was the son of David P. and Mina (Miller) Shafer; attended public schools; Meadville High School; Allegheny College, A.B., 1938; and Yale University Law School, LL.B., 1941. He pursued a career as an attorney; was a member of the Pennsylvania and New York Supreme Courts, and U.S. Federal Courts; served in the US Navy, Pacific Campaign, PT Boat Commander, 1942-1945; District Attorney of Crawford County, 1948-1956; president of Community Chest (United Way); member of the Republican Executive Committee of Crawford County; member of the American Legion, VFW, Masons, and Rotary. Elected to the state Senate in 1958, elected Lt. Governor of Pennsylvania, 1963-1966, under Gov. William Warren Scranton; and elected as the 39th Governor of Pennsylvania, 1967-1971. He died on December 12, 2006.
