Of Wayne County Born in Newburgh, Orange County, New York, October 14, 1826, the Son of Henry and Azubah (Mailler) Nelson; attended common schools; licensed Methodist-Episcopal minister; joined New York Conference in 1850; married Amelia Calder, daughter of Rev. Alexander Calder; moved to Equinunk Methodist church, 1854; Democrat; Postmaster under Pierce and Buchanan; member of the House, 1862, for seven years; elected to Senate 1878; served eight years and as Chaplain of the Senate; promoted the Jefferson Railroad Charter and the channeling of upper Delaware for logging.
