Biography

1878
Born in 1839, reared by his mother after his father’s early death; attended common schools; telegraph messenger and operator; studied law but never practiced; clerk at the Philadelphia Ledger, 1850s; supervised the magazine department at T.B. Peterson and Co.; Philadelphia Assessor, four years; operated law blank stationery business; elected to the state Senate at age 28, 1867; served the upper house through 1878 when he died of Bright’s Disease in office, March 18, 1878.
