Son of William and Margaret (Sharen) McMeens; originally from South Carolina, settled before 1772 near Lewisburg.  Col. John McMeens received a rural education; served as a Luzerne county commissioner, 1808; member of the Susquehanna Navigation Commission; the state House of Representatives, 1814, 1817-18; state Senate, 1819-1823; justice of the peace under Gov. Snyder; died about 1823, interred at Newbury.
