Biography

1871 -

Born June 9, 1871, Pittsburgh, son of Joseph and Hanna (May) McKee; educated in public schools and Iron City College. Graduating, McKee moved to Utah and became a “ranchman,” returning to Pittsburgh in 1891 where he entered the stair-building business for seven years. In 1898 he was elected Captain of Co. F, Fourteenth Regt., Pennsylvania National Guard, enlisting, with his regiment, as a Captain of U.S. Volunteers on May 12, 1898, the Spanish American War campaign. He mustered out on February 28, 1899, continuing service in the Fourteenth, elected Major in 1905. Pursued the Hotel business in Pittsburgh; he later moved to Homewood after his house burned down, killing his only child; became an insurance broker about 1910. In 1891, he married Aseneath Smith Dean. Mexican Border War: Commissioned Colonel, First Brigade, Co. F, Artilley, US Army Headquarters, February 21, 1916; Commanded the 107th Field Artillery during training at Camp Hancock for deployment to France, 1917; commission expired; US Commission expired February 21, 1920; commissioned General, First Division, Commander of Pennsylvania National Guard, 1920.
