Of Jefferson County, Bowers was born in Winslow, Gaskill Township, Jefferson County, November 20, 1864, son of Jacob Kitelinger and Ellen (Rhoads) Bowers. Received his education in public and private schools; entered the lumber business at age 18; operator of Bowers Brothers Coal Company (later the Bowersville Coal Co), the Banks Coal Co., The Pratt Coal Co., the Arthur Coal Co., the Straitwell Coal Co., the Hamilton Coal Co., the Pansy Coal Co., and numerous others. He at one time operated the Punxsutawney Planing Mill on the present site of the Kurtz Coal, Lumber, and Supply Company; and was president of the Weber Memorial Training School.  He was a banker, served as county treasurer, and two years a state senator, 1929-1930.  He died December 15, 1947 in Punxsutawney; interred in Circle Hill Cemetery.  The Senator married Lillie Mae Cessna, July 1, 1886.
