The son of Patrick Blewitt and Catharine Scanlon, Edward Francis Blewitt of Lackawanna County was born in New Orleans, LA, January 2, 1859; was educated at Lafayette College, Easton, PA, and graduated as a civil engineer in 1879. Employed as a city engineer in Scranton, PA, 1883 to 1893, the Senator also served as school controller in 1884 for one term. Contractor, consulting engineer, and chief engineer from 1897 to 1902, Guadalajara City, Jalisco, Mexico, supervising construction of a sewer and water works; elected to the Senate, serving 1907-1910. The Senator married (1) 1879 to Mary Ellen Stanton; and (2) Mary Ann Blackwell, 1891. He was the maternal great-grandfather of US Vice President Joe Biden, however contrary to campaign assertions that Senator Blewett was Pennsylvania’s first Irish Roman Catholic state Senator, that distinction actually belongs to the Hon. William McSherry (McSherrystown, Adams County), 1813-1817, whose son, James, also served in the Senate during the Civil War.
