Biography

1884 - 1970

Charles A. Blass was the son of Adam and Mary Blass, born in Erie, Pennsylvania, December 17, 1884.  He graduated from Erie High School; the University of Pennsylvania, B.S. Economics, 1907; worked for his father’s wholesale confectionery business, and studied law, graduating from the University of Michigan in 1912 with his J.D.  In 1913, he was admitted to the Erie county bar, establishing a popular private practice; assuming the office of assistant district attorney of Erie County in 1916-1920. During the World War, he was a member of the Council of National Defense, appointed by Governor Brumbaugh, and also served as a member of the State Committee of Public Safety, and is secretary of the local committee. During this same period he was a member of the "four- minute" men, and gave his support to all war causes until the military emergency had passed.  He served 15 years in the state Senate, 1945-1960.  The Senator belonged to numerous civic, fraternal, and professional organizations.  Blass married, December 30, 1907, Annabelle Koehler.  He died Nov. 14, 1970.
