1878 - 1952

Born in Elizabeth Twp., Allegheny County, March 6, 1878, William D. Mansfield grew up on a farm; attended public schools in Elizabeth and Versailles Townships, and graduated from McKeesport Business College in 1896.  He pursued the real estate and insurance business in 1901; was director of the First National Bank of McKeesport and director in the Watson Paint and Glass Company of Youngstown, Ohio.  William also served as president of the Electric Battery Service Co. of Detroit, Michigan.  From 1902, he was elected an alderman of the Fourth Ward, McKeesport three consecutive terms; served as city treasurer, 1916-1917; chaired the Republican city-county Executive Committee in 1921; reelected in 1922; and was elected to the Senate of Pennsylvania for three four-year terms, 1923-1934.  He, with others, purchased the McKeesport Daily News in 1925.  After legislative service, William returned to local civic and business interests, elected county commissioner and becoming the editor of the Daily News.  He died October 6, 1952, age 74, in McKeesport.
