Of Punxsutawney, son of Dr. George Michael and Salome (Hartzfelt) Kurtz, Theodore was born in Young Township, Punxsutawney, Jefferson Co., Pennsylvania on February 27, 1868. He received his education in Jefferson County public schools; Waynesburg College (Greene Co.); pursued the flour and feed business in Punxsutawney; purchased the Punxsutawney Spirit, 1892; shared an interest in the McKnight Coal Co. and Cambria Smokeless Coal Co.; member of the Punxsutawney Board of Trade; director and vice president of Punxsutawney National Bank; Burgess of Punxsutawney, 1897; chair of the Republican County Committee, four terms; and delegate to state nominating convention, 1898. Senator Kurtz died in 1945, interred in Bell Township, Jefferson County.
