George Kunkel was the son of Judge George Kunkel, born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, March 10, 1893; educated in public schools, Harrisburg Academy, and Franklin and Marshall College, graduating in 1915.  An attorney, he attended Harvard Law School, 1915, 1916, and 1917; then Officers' Training Camp at Fort Niagara, New York, commissioned second lieutenant in September, 1917, and sent to Camp Meade, Maryland, where he was assigned to duty with the 30th Machine Gun Battalion; nine months at Camp Meade, then overseas with the Seventy-ninth Division of the American Expeditionary Force, July 1918, active duty during the Argonne offensive; promoted to first lieutenant, serving in that capacity during the ten months he was in France. He returned to the United States in June, 1919, was honorably discharged, and in September of that year, resumed the study of law, entering Dickinson Law School at Carlisle, Pennsylvania, graduating with A. M. and LL. В. degrees, 1920.  He was admitted to the Dauphin county bar in July, 1920, and began practice in Harrisburg, where he built a successful law practice.  The Hon. George Kunkel died in May 1965.
