Late 19th Century reformer of the Democratic Party, Joseph P. Kennedy was born December 9, 1857, the son of W.J. Kennedy, a native of County Antrim, Ireland. He was admitted to the Philadelphia bar in 1879; elected to the state Senate when not yet 24, Nov. 1881 (to fill unexpired term); re-elected in 1882; died in office, June 19, 1886, interred in Philadelphia at the Old Cathedral Cemetery.
