Elias H Irish
Attorney and son of William Beckford and Lydia Cadwalader Irish (second wife), Elias Irish was born about 1830, the great-grandson of state Senator Nathaniel Irish, and known in certain circles as the “deeply in love” suitor of family friend Anna Elizabeth Dickinson, “the American Joan of Arc.” While the abolitionist and woman’s rights pioneer expressed emotion for Elias, she exhibited less devotion than the attorney-legislator expressed for her. Traveling South for his health, Dickinson met with Elias shortly before he died in November 1866 of malaria. The tragic end of the Hon. Irish haunted the woman’s rights icon for the rest of her life.
