Biography

1849 - 1899

William H. Hyde, of Elk county, was born at Ridgway, Pa.. on May 27, 1849, the son of Joseph S. and Jane Gillis Hyde.  He attended the Ridgway public schools until 1860; Painesville, Ohio public schools until 1865; and Lewisburg University (Bucknell) for one term. Hyde pursued a lumber and mercantile business career at Ridgway, Pa.; establishing the firm of J.S. and W.H. Hyde, later the Hall, Kaul, and Hyde Company.  He was later associated with the Hyde-Murphy, Hyde and Thayer, Hyde and Redding, and Hall, Gardner companies.  He served as president of: the Clarion River Railway Company, Clarion River Gas Company, and the Ridgway Light and Heat Company; he is also largely interested in the banking business at Ridgway and Brockwayville, Pa.   He held a considerable real estate portfolio, timberland, and four sawmills.  William was elected to the Senate November 7, 1893, to fill the unexpired term of Harry Alvin Hall; resigned; re-elected November 6, 1894.  William H. Hyde passed away on August 12, 1899.
