Biography

1821 - 1866

Howkin Bulkeley Beardslee was born on April 15, 1821, the son of Bulkeley and Lucretia Kimble Beardslee.  His father was a native of Fairfield, Connecticut.   Howkin’s family moved to Wayne County, PA, settling at Mount Pleasant about 1818, receiving a rural education; reading law; and becoming a member of the Luzerne County bar Association.  Beardslee served as register and recorder of Wayne County from 1845 to 1848; represented the county in the state House of Representatives, 1860; and the state Senate 1864-1866. He edited and owned for many years the Wayne County Herald.  Beardslee moved to Wilkes-Barre in 1871 and became the editor and part proprietor of the Luzerne Union, and subsequently its sole owner.  Late in life he worked as the editor and proprietor of the Luzerne County Herald, which he established in 1882. He married Charlotte Clark of Abington Township, Lackawanna County.  Senator Beardslee died at Indian Orchard, Massachusetts on March 11, 1886.
