Born in Somerset, Pennsylvania, January 10, 1811, Hiram was the son of Samuel Jr. and Mary (Shockey) Findlay. Findlay was a farmer, a notable local politician. With David Hay, he laid out the town of Glencoe, Somerset, PA, in 1870. He served one three-year term in the state Senate, 1870-1872. The senator married Mary Meese and died in Somerset County on November 7, 1882.
