Born on March 17, 1837, Venango County, John Fertig was the son of Isaac and Hanna (Stover) Fertig; attended common schools, Neilltown Academy, taught school in Deerfield Township, and entered the coal-oil business in 1859 on Oil Creek. He worked as an oil refiner, shipper, and pipeline operator with United States Pipeline Company; served as mayor of Titusville, 1873-1875; was elected to one term in the state Senate, 1876; unsuccessful bid for Lt. Gov., 1878; delegate to the Chicago Democratic National Convention, 1892; and elected as a several-term member of the Titusville School Board. Fertig was a member of the Titusville Board of Trade, forming the Industrial Fund Association, 1895-1896; Vice President and Director of the Titusville Commercial Bank; and president of the Titusville Iron Company. He married Angeline Coldren, December 21, 1861, in Centreville, Venango County. He died on March 19, 1911, Los Angeles, California, and is buried in Titusville.
