Born in New Castle, Lawrence County about 1889, the son of William J. Sr. and Elizabeth (McCready) Eroe; William attended public schools; worked as a railroad brakeman at 27; served as a private in the 1st Cav., Troop F., United States Army, 1916-1919, Mexican Emergency (Pancho Villa); mustered out of U.S. Service, 28th Div. as Supply Sgt, 1917; Lawrence County auditor, 1927; member of the state House of Representatives, 1933-1936; state Senate, 1937-1940; married Ruth Genkinger, 1919. A Democrat, in 1939 he voted with Republicans to regain their upper house majority. He was subsequently fired by his employer, the American Cyanamid Company, for his action, which effectively ended Governor Earle”s “Little New Deal.”
