Personal Life & Education:

Edwin B. "Ted" Erickson III  born May 18, 1938, Philadelphia, Pa. Republican, son of the late Edwin B. II and Ruth Erickson; Haverford High School, 1956; Albright College, 1960 (Bachelor of Science in biology and chemistry). Bryn Mawr College, 1969 (Ph.D. in biochemistry and microbiology). Married Katherine J., 1 child Jonathan.  Died Newtown, January 8, 2019.

Early Career:

Tenured Assistant Professor of Biology at Hamilton College (1969-1973) in microbiology, biochemistry and general biology. Taught general biology, anatomy and physiology, cell physiology and zoology at Drexel University and East Stroudsburg State College (1962-1969).

Served as Upper Darby’s Director of Public Health. Worked from 1976 to 1982 as Chief Administrative Officer of Upper Darby Township. Elected to Delaware County Council, serving as a member from 1982 to 1989 and as chairman (1987-1989).

From 1989 to 1992, implemented federal environmental programs as Regional Administrator of the United States Environmental Protection Agency, Region III. Responsible for a workforce of approximately 1,000 people, oversaw environmental standards in a region covering Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.

Pennsylvania Politics:

26th Senatorial District April 23, 2001- January 2, 2015. Served as Chairman of the Senate Majority Policy Committee from 2010 to 2014.

Served as Vice Chairman of the Senate Environmental Resources and Energy Committee, and as a member of the Communications and Technology, Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure, Law and Justice, and Public Health and Welfare Committees.  Member of the following caucuses: Arthritis Caucus, Autism Caucus; Biotechnology/Life Science Caucus, Delaware River Basin Caucus, Delaware River Port Caucus, Firefighter and Emergency Services Caucus, and Pro-Life Caucus


Received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Albright College (2001).

Authored an introduction for the publication, EPA Region 3 20 Years Of Making A Difference Say No To Air, Land and Water Pollution and three articles published in professional science journals.

Volunteer service included: Community Action Agency; Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission; Delaware County Human Services Partnership; Pennsylvania Resources Council; March of Dimes; Scouting for Food; Green Space Alliance; Delaware County Transportation Management Association; Delaware County Community College Educational Foundation; Delaware County Economic Development Partnership; Partnership for the Delaware Estuary.

Served on the Local Government Commission, Pennsylvania Energy Development Authority, and Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency Board of Directors. Former member of the Army Science Board, as an advisor to the United States Army on scientific and technological matters.
