Biography

1821 - 1907

The father of Senator George Wallace Delameter, George B. was born on January 14, 1821, Whitehall, Washington Co., New York, the son of Thomas and Martha (Day) Delameter.  The senator was educated in private and public schools; Waterford Academy; Oberlin College; and Allegheny College, Meadville.  He read law with John Farrelly and was admitted to the Crawford County bar in 1847; and the bars of Erie and Warren counties thereafter.  He pursued business in Meadville 1840-1850; relocated in Youngsville, Pennsylvania to continue his business career through 1864, returning to Meadville.  He served as a stockholder and board director in numerous businesses and was seated as Trustee of Oberlin and Allegheny Colleges.  Delameter was a delegate to the 1848 Buffalo National Convention, nominating Van Buren on the anti-slavery platform.  He was a charter member of the Republican Party and served in the state Senate, 1871-1873.  He died May 6, 1907, in Crawford County.  His wife was Susan Cole Town.
