Of Sewickley, Robert J. Cunningham was born at Elizabeth, Allegheny County, April 5, 1860, the son of Irish immigrants Stewart and Elizabeth J. Cunningham; he attended public schools and the academies of A.T. Douthett and James Dickson; worked ten years at the Times and Leader newspaper; worked as cashier of the National Life Insurance Co.; was general agent for the Manhattan Life Insurance Company; served as Controller of Allegheny County; member of the common and executive councils of Sewickley for seven years; secretary and treasurer of the National Water Works and Construction Company; and was elected to the Senate of Pennsylvania in 1906, resigning on May 11, 1908. He married Edith Gilmore.
