Biography

Francis Collins was born in Saugerties, Ulster County, N.Y., March 5, 1841, the son of Luzerne County associate judge Thomas and Catherine Collins; attended St. Joseph’s College, near Montrose, Susquehanna County; moved with his parents to Dinsmore, Lackawanna County, Pa.; attended Wyoming Seminary at Kingston, Pa.; studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1866; private practice in Scranton; elected district attorney of the mayor’s court, 1869; served in the State senate 1872-1874; elected to Congress, (1875-1879); although a Democrat, Collins headed a Democratic-Greenback faction that rivaled a Republican-Greenback group led by Senator Stanton;* he resumed law practice and died in Scranton, Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, November 21, 1891; interred in Cathedral Cemetery, Hyde Park, Scranton.
