1791
Born 1743 in Ireland; settled in Carlisle as a “long rifle” manufacturer during French and Indian War; Delaware and Shawnee agent, 1775; Major in the Continental Line under Daniel Morgan during the Revolution, action at Saratoga and Monmouth; awarded honor by Washington to receive Cornwallis’s sword at Yorktown; negotiated treaties of Ft. Stanwix and Ft. Macintosh; Allegheny Co. judge, member of first state Senate, 1790-1791; killed in action Nov. 4, 1791 at the Battle of the Wabash (Ohio). Kentucky, Ohio, and Pennsylvania named counties in Senator Butler’s honor.
