Born at Beach Lake, Wayne County on Aug. 16, 1861, the son of Charles and Grace (Marshall) Barnes; Senator Barnes attended public Schools, Chill Seminary, New York; taught in Wayne County public school system; pursued the lumber business; ran a saw mill by 1910; elected county prothonotary; clerk of the courts of Wayne County; served a four-year term in the state Senate in 1918, for term 1919-1922.  The Senator died in 1945.  He married Elizabeth Grace Oliver.
