Biography

1760 - 1833

A political partner of Michael Leib, Born,  June 18, 1760, Philadelphia, to Robert and Parthenia (Hetherington) Porter; received limited schooling but emerged as a medical doctor; elected to a four-year term to the state Senate, 1801-1805; filled Michal Leib’s vacant seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, 1806-1811; selected as Prothonotary of the District Court, Philadelphia, 1811-1817; served in the same capacity for the Common Pleas Court.  He died August 1, 1833, Liverpool, England, after accompanying his cousin, merchant Andrew McDowall of Charleston, South Carolina, on a trans-Atlantic business trip.
