McELROY, Joseph M., a Representative from McKean County; born in Allegheny County, Pa., February 23, 1842; served, Company A, 102nd  Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry (November, 1861-December, 1864; prisoner of war, Battle of Chancellorsville); mercantile salesman (3 years); engaged in the coal and oil business; elected, council, Oil City, Venango County; elected, mayor, Oil City (1877-1879), elected, city council president, Bradford; elected, prothonotary, McKean County (1884-1894); elected as a Republican to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1902 and 1904; appointed, Pennsylvania Commission of Soldiers’ Orphan Schools (1906); not a candidate for reelection to the House (1906); died, October 7, 1941.
