ITKIN, Ivan, a Representative from Allegheny County; born, March 29, 1936 in New York City, New York County, NY; B.Ch.E., Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, 1956; M.Nuc.E., New York University, 1957; Ph.D., Mathematics, University of Pittsburgh, 1964; nuclear scientist, applied mathematician and reactor physicist, Westinghouse Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory; chair. 14th Ward Democratic Committee; judge of elections; member, American Jewish Congress; elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives as a Democrat in 1972; served 12 consecutive terms thereafter; elected, Majority Caucus Chair (1983-January 23, 1990); elected, Majority Whip (January 23, 1990-1992); elected, Majority Leader (1993-1994); elected, Minority Whip (1995-1998); appointed, Select Committee on Three Mile Island (1979); appointed, Governor’s Energy Council (1981-1982); appointed, Joint State Government Commission (1983-1998); ex-officio, Select Committee on Rules Review (1993); appointed, co-chair, Select Committee on Eminent Domain (1997-1998); not a candidate for reelection to the House (1998); unsuccessful campaign, Pennsylvania Governor (1998); appointed, Director of the Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management, United States Department of Energy (1999); died, April 5, 2020 in Fort Lauderdale, Broward County, Florida.
