Daniel J Thomas
Born in 1839 in Swansea, South Wales; worked in the coal mines at 12 years old and attended night school at the same time; emigrated to America at age 20 and worked the Luzerne and Schuylkill mines until he was 35. Later appointed mine foreman at Cambola mines, he soon advanced to general inside foreman for the Dodson mines at Beaver Brook, Luzerne County. He developed the Morea Colliery and was its superintendent, as well as the Kaska William Colliery, through 1897; elected twice as school director in Luzerne County; and selected twice as the same in Mahanoy, Schuylkill County. Daniel was the owner of the Pennsylvania Hotel in Mahanoy City and elected to the state Senate in 1902, serving one term. He married Mary Lloyd; and died in 1911, interred in Charles Baber Cemetery, Pottsville.
