Biography

Harman Yerkes was born to Stephen and Amy Hart Yerks in Warminster Township, Bucks County. He attended the Tennett School in Hartsville and Williston Seminary in Easthampton Massachusetts. He taught in the Warminster schools and went on to study law in Doylestown, PA. On November 3, 1865. He was admitted into the Bucks County bar and soon after opened his own practice there. After opening his practice, he served as the county DA from 1868-1871. In January of 1884 he began a 20-year term as President Judge of the 7th Pennsylvania Judicial District (1884-1904). Harmon represented Bucks County in the Senate from 1873-1876. Judge Harman wrote the laws regulating orphans' court, civil courts, and criminal courts. He founded the Hospital for the Insane in Norristown. Judge Harmon also served on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.
