Morris High School, 1918; A.B., Waynesburg College, 1922; assistant instructor, mathematics, Waynesburg College (senior year); proprietor, general contracting business; member, Pennsylvania State Democratic Committee (4 years); elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives as a Democrat in 1932; elected to serve 3 more consecutive terms; acting, Majority Floor Leader (1935); elected, Speaker in a Special Session (1936); elected, Speaker (1937-1938); appointed, Local Government Commission (1935-1940); appointed, Joint State Government Commission (1937-1938); appointed, General State Authority Commission (1937-1938); appointed, Pennsylvania Commission on Interstate Cooperation (1937-1940); not a candidate for reelection to the House (1940); elected, Pennsylvania Lieutenant Governor (1955-1959); unsuccessful campaign, Pennsylvania Governor (1958); gubernatorial appointee, State Turnpike Commission (1959-1963); died, May 18, 1977 in Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania; interred, Greene County, Memorial Park, Waynesburg, Greene County, Pennsylvania.
