Subject: | Establishing an Ireland Trade Commission |
As co-chairs of the American Irish State Legislators Caucus, we will soon introduce legislation to establish an Ireland Trade Commission in the Commonwealth. The Commission’s goals will focus on enhancing educational, economic, governmental, and people-to-people links between Pennsylvania and Ireland. About 16% of Pennsylvanians are of Irish descent themselves, and we’re grateful for our shared ancestors and positive relationship together. This Commission will provide an excellent opportunity to continue to augment this already flourishing Pennsylvania-Irish connection. Members will be appointed by the Governor, majority and minority House and Senate leadership, and leaders in business with a special interest in Ireland. The Commission will present its findings and recommendations to effectuate its purpose to the Governor and Legislature on an annual basis. Additionally, no public funds will be appropriated for the Commission, which will conduct its own fundraising to pay for expenses. We have a great opportunity with Ireland being the key launchpad for US expansion in the European market. This will provide opportunity for significant mutual trade investment, along with the other policy, business, academic, and economic possibilities under this Commission. We look forward to joining other states with an Irish Trade Commission Establishment, and grateful for your consideration of co-sponsoring this legislation. |
