Session of 2023 - 2024 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: February 8, 2023 04:20 PM
From: Senator Lisa Baker and Sen. Judy Ward
To: All Senate members
Subject: Protecting Vulnerable Seniors

One of the effects of the higher-than-normal inflation rate America has experienced in 2023 is the triggering of a commensurately substantial cost-of-living increase for the recipients of Social Security.  That comes with an unfortunate consequence for numerous seniors, who find themselves pushed above the qualifying income limits for vital programs, such as property tax and rent rebates.  This is certainly at odds with the philosophy of these programs.

We are introducing legislation that will hold harmless this year’s Social Security COLA in the calculation of financial eligibility for senior citizen assistance programs where the Commonwealth determines eligibility.

Please join us in this effort to protect vulnerable seniors.

Introduced as SB608
