Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2023 - 2024 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: December 28, 2022 09:20 AM
From: Senator David G. Argall
To: All Senate members
Subject: Reforming the Process of Electing the Lieutenant Governor

l will reintroduce legislation that would amend the state Constitution to allow gubernatorial candidates to select their own running mate. This will be done in a manner similar to the process in which Presidential candidates select their running mates.

Under my bill, the candidates for governor and lieutenant governor can run as a team with a shared vision for the Commonwealth. This bill would provide for greater trust in the executive branch to delegate duties while avoiding potential division and friction between the two office holders.

This bipartisan bill passed the legislature in the past with overwhelming, bipartisan votes and has been supported by Republican and Democratic former Lieutenant Governors.

This bill needs to pass the legislature again so the citizens of Pennsylvania can vote for its final approval.

Introduced as SB570
