Subject: | Residential Electric Vehicle Charging Station Tax Credit |
In the near future, I plan to introduce companion legislation, in partnership with Representative Ciresi, to assist Pennsylvanians in the transition from fossil-fuel powered vehicles to electric vehicles (EVs). As many of you have likely seen, EV ownership in the Commonwealth, and nationwide, is becoming more commonplace. Government policy and initiatives at both the state and federal level are helping to facilitate that transition, prompting auto manufactures to incorporate more EV offerings in their vehicle line-ups. When considering the high price of gas and the individual and collective benefits that EVs afford, more and more individuals are open to making the transition to EVs than ever before. However, the availability of charging infrastructure and upfront cost of EV ownership is still preventing many individuals from making the transition. While more is being done at both the state and federal levels to make the purchase of EVs more affordable, there are currently no state incentives for the purchase of residential EV charging stations. To that end, my legislation would authorize a refundable tax credit equivalent to 100% of the cost to purchase and install an electric vehicle charging station or port, not to exceed $2,000. This state tax credit could supplement a federal tax credit for the purchase and installation of residential EV charging stations that was extended and adjusted by the federal Inflation Reduction Act (which can only be claimed if the equipment is installed in a low-income census tract starting in 2023). Authorizing this tax credit would help to address cost and access barriers by making at-home charging more affordable for all Pennsylvanians. More can, and should, be done to help usher in the transition to EVs. Please join me in cosponsoring this important piece of legislation to aid in that effort. |
