Subject: | Expanding Military Decoration Eligibility |
I will be introducing legislation to amend Title 51 to provide for the ability to recognize civilians and members of the military of a friendly foreign nation by allowing them to be awarded the Pennsylvania Distinguished Service Medal and the Pennsylvania Meritorious Service Medal. Current statute only allows civilians, veterans, members of the Pennsylvania National Guard, or the armed forces of the United States and their reserve components to be presented with these two medals. Making the change to Title 51 will allow the commonwealth to better recognize the efforts and contributions of our strategic allies. This is especially applicable to Pennsylvania’s partners in Lithuania. For over 25 years, the PA National Guard and the Lithuanian Armed Forces have enjoyed a special partnership. This legislation is supported by the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs and was passed in the Senate with a unanimous vote last session. I hope that you will join me as a co-sponsor. |
