Subject: | Snow & Ice Removal Technology Grant Program |
Soon, I will re-introduce SB1354 of 2022, to create a grant program providing funds for the installation of snow and ice removal technology to assist commercial vehicles with removing snow and ice from their rooftops following winter storms. The establishment of this grant program will fulfill a promise I made following the passage of “Christine’s Law”, also known as Act 90 of 2022. That legislation was named in honor of Christine Lambert, who was tragically killed because of dislodged ice from a passing tractor trailer on Christmas Day, 2005. The Act establishes cause for law enforcement to cite motorists with snow and ice accumulation on their vehicles, if an officer believes the amount of accumulated snow/ice poses a threat to persons or property. Grant funds will be made available to entities to invest in snow removal technology for individual businesses and publicly accessible locations, like truck stops. Eligible entities and locations will be identified through stakeholder input and feedback. Funding will be explored through public-private partnerships and preexisting programs that seek to improve roadway safety. I encourage my colleagues to join me in cosponsoring the establishment of this program. Previous cosponsors included Senators: FONTANA, DILLON, COSTA, and KEARNEY. |
