With its decision in the Dobbs case (2022), the United States Supreme Court did more than merely affirm Mississippi’s restrictive abortion law, by a 5-4 vote it overturned the court’s previous holdings in Roe and Casey. In doing so, it called into question a wide range of fundamental privacy rights that all Americans have come to take for granted. Indeed, Justice Thomas’s concurrence in Dobbs advocated exactly for that. To address this attack on our core freedoms, I will be introducing legislation that would amend our State Constitution by establishing a comprehensive right to privacy that includes sexual rights, marriage rights, and abortion rights in the Commonwealth as established under prior United States Supreme Court precedent set forth in Griswold, Roe, Eisenstadt, Lawrence, and Obergefell. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation. |
