Subject: Cost of Living Adjustment for Retired Public School Employees

Pennsylvania state law requires the General Assembly to enact legislation in order to give a raise to retired public school employees. While inflation has been a recent hot topic, these retired educators and school personnel have not received a cost of living adjustment (COLA) in 20 years. This is obviously problematic because several measures show a cumulative rate of inflation of more than 50 percent from 2002 to 2022.

With the price of nearly all goods and services rising each year, it is vital that we ensure educators who gave so much to their communities can afford to live with dignity in retirement. In effect, the value of these retirees’ payments is decreasing each year the legislature does not act. Therefore, we will soon be introducing legislation that would provide retired public school employees with a long overdue COLA.

We know education provides opportunities and insights that can change a student’s future, and many of us remember a teacher or counselor from the past that had a profound impact on our lives. Everyone deserves to retire with dignity. Show your support for our retired educators and school staff by cosponsoring this legislation.
