Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2021 - 2022 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: June 10, 2022 12:37 PM
From: Senator Patrick M. Browne
To: All Senate members
Subject: Fire Protection Equipment Program

In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation that would establish a Fire Protection Equipment program.

This program would require registration of a person or company before fire protection equipment work can be performed in Pennsylvania. It would also require certification of technicians to ensure they are proficient in performing fire protection equipment work.

This legislation would establish five classes of registration for fire protection equipment work: portable fire extinguisher contractor, kitchen fire suppression system contractor, special hazard fire suppression system contractor, water-based fire protection system contractor and fire alarm system contractor, in addition to any other class identified by the fire commissioner.

In addition, this legislation would require the State Fire Commissioner’s office to maintain a list of state registered fire protection equipment contractors and certified fire protection equipment technicians so individuals, families and business owners can be assured that the fire protection equipment contractor or technician they are looking to hire is a legitimate and qualified person to perform the work.

There have been documented cases of individuals or businesses improperly testing equipment or not testing it at all. In some instances, stickers are just placed on fire equipment certifying that said equipment has been tested or replaced. The safety of our citizens and their property is too important not to ensure that fire equipment, if needed during an emergency, will work as intended because it has been correctly installed and tested.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation that will ensure Pennsylvania’s residents and businesses have properly installed and tested fire protection equipment by registered Fire Protection Equipment contractors and certified technicians.
