Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2021 - 2022 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: March 11, 2022 11:11 AM
From: Senator David G. Argall
To: All Senate members
Subject: Roberto Clemente Day in Pennsylvania

I will soon introduce a resolution to declare August 18th, 2022, as Roberto Clemente Day in Pennsylvania.

Born in Puerto Rico, Clemente first entered the world of baseball at the age of 17 when he played for the Puerto Rican Baseball League. In 1954, the Brooklyn Dodgers signed him to play for their Triple-A team based in Montreal. In 1955, Clemente began playing with the Pittsburgh Pirates where his career really took off. Clemente would play with the Pirates throughout the duration of his Major League career which lasted from 1955 to 1972.

During the course of his career with the Pirates, Roberto Clemente would be a 15-time All Star, a two-time World Series Champion, the 1966 National League MVP, the 1971 World Series MVP, a 12-time Golden Glove Award winner, and a four-time National League Batting Champion. Following Clemente’s untimely death in 1972 as the result of a plane crash, the Pittsburgh Pirates retired his number, No. 21, and the five-year waiting period was waived in order for him to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1973.

In addition to his time on the baseball diamond, Clemente also served his country in the United States Marine Corps and was inducted into the Marine Corps Sports Hall of Fame in 2003. He was also inducted into the Puerto Rican Veterans Hall of Fame in 2018.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution which will honor a true Pennsylvania legend.
