On March 6, 2020, Governor Tom Wolf confirmed Pennsylvania’s first two Covid-19 cases. The next week, much of our society shut down to prevent the spread of this disease. On March 18, 2020, the first Pennsylvanian died of Covid-19. At the time of this writing, two years since, over 43,000 Pennsylvanians—our family members, friends, and neighbors—have died from it. Due to necessary social distancing measures, many families and friends were not able to give their loved ones the funeral or memorial service they desired. After some of the measures were reduced or lifted, some still opted not to attend these services for fear of catching and spreading the disease. While the availability of vaccines has reduced the infection and death rate from Covid-19, dozens of Pennsylvanians continue to die every day. In recognition of all those we have lost, and continue to lose, and the families and friends who grieve them, I plan to introduce a resolution designating March 18, 2022 as a Day of Remembrance for the Pennsylvanians who have died of Covid-19. |
