Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2021 - 2022 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: February 4, 2022 03:19 PM
From: Senator Amanda M. Cappelletti
To: All Senate members
Subject: Dr. Jean Griswold Memorial Highway

In the near future I will introduce legislation to designate the portion of State Route 3001, from the intersection with Walton Road to the intersection with Valley Forge Road in Montgomery County, as the Dr. Jean Griswold Memorial Highway.

A resident of Philadelphia, Dr. Jean Griswold was born on July 30, 1930. She was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis at the age of 39. Twelve years later, in 1982, she would go on to found Griswold Special Care, later to be renamed Griswold Home Care. Inspired by her own experience with healthcare struggles, she built a company which would become the world’s oldest multinational non-medical home care company, with hundreds of offices and over 10,000 professional caregivers throughout the United States, Mexico, and South Korea. Additionally, she founded Pop-Ins, Home Helpers, House Calls Unlimited, Nurses Aides of North America, and Nursing Options Worldwide.

Dr. Griswold graduated from Kent Place School, Douglass College with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Business. She later received her Master of Education in Personnel and Guidance from Rutgers and an honorary Doctorate from Holy Family University. She served as an Entrepreneur in Residence at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.

Along with receiving countless awards including, the City of Philadelphia’s “Spirit of Philadelphia” award, Pennsylvania’s Honor Roll of Women, Fifty Best Women in Business, Rutgers University’s Hall of Distinguished alumni, and Working Woman’s Entrepreneurial Excellence Award, Dr. Griswold was featured on the Today Show and in Forbes Magazine and Entrepreneur. She also penned the book “Fears of the Elderly” in 2013, had her story shared in two books “The Courage to Give” and “Women of Spirit,” and she was the subject of a one-woman play, “Letter to My Daughter.”

Dr. Jean Griswold passed away on January 28, 2017, at the age of 86 after a 50-year battle with Multiple Sclerosis.

Please join me in honoring the life of a home healthcare pioneer and woman entrepreneur who overcame her own healthcare struggles to bring peace of mind to countless thousands of others by designating a portion of State Route 3001 in honor of Dr. Jean Griswold.

Introduced as SB1117
