In the near future, I intend to introduce a resolution recognizing Friday, February 4, 2022, as “National Wear Red Day” in Pennsylvania. The intent of this resolution is to raise awareness for women’s heart health and improve the lives of women around the world. Heart disease is the leading cause of death among women, causing 1 in 5 deaths each year. Nearly 80 percent of cardiac events can be prevented, yet not enough women take the necessary steps to prevent, detect, and treat this disease. As a result, cardiovascular disease kills one woman every 105 seconds in the Unites States. Every year, 30% of the deaths among women in the U.S are caused by heart attacks and strokes. Studies are showing that women’s heart disease awareness is increasing, but that this knowledge still lags in minorities and younger women, according to the American Heart Association (AHA). By recognizing National Wear Red Day in the Commonwealth, we can increase public awareness of cardiovascular disease and the risks it poses to all women. National Wear Red Day, and the AHA’s Go Red for Women movement, encourages women to be aware of the five factors that can most significantly impact cardiovascular health. These are:
