Subject: | Resolution Designating “Transgender Day of Remembrance” and “Transgender Awareness Week” in Pennsylvania |
Soon, we plan to introduce a resolution designating November 20, 2021 as “Transgender Day of Remembrance” and November 13-19, 2021 as “Transgender Awareness Week” in Pennsylvania. SisTers PGH describes Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) as a day where trans people gather worldwide to remember those lost to violence in the past year. Appallingly, this year has already seen the loss of at least 241 transgender or gender non-conforming people worldwide to violence - with at least 44 in the United States, according to TransLivesMatter.org. As in previous years, most of these people were Black and Latinx transgender women. In Pennsylvania, we say the names of Jasmine Bright and JJ Bright (Ambridge), Chyna Carrillo (New Wilmington), and Whispering Wind Bear Spirit (York). Transgender Awareness Week proceeds Transgender Day of Remembrance and is described by GLAAD as a week when transgender people and their allies take action to bring attention to the community by educating the public about who transgender people are, sharing stories and experiences, and advancing advocacy around the issues of prejudice, discrimination, and violence that affect the transgender community. This resolution is intended to celebrate the joy, beauty, and lives of transgender people, while also elevating the continued need for legislative action so that Pennsylvania can be a place where all trans people are safe, healthy, and thriving. Please join us in co-sponsoring this resolution. |
