Senate of Pennsylvania
Session of 2021 - 2022 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: May 19, 2021 10:59 AM
From: Senator Michele Brooks and Sen. Maria Collett
To: All Senate members
Subject: Student Loan Forgiveness Program for Nurses

We will soon introduce legislation that seeks to encourage nurses to remain in Pennsylvania to live and work.  The Student Loan Forgiveness Program for Nurses will utilize $1,000,000 annually to enter into agreements with recipients to reduce their student loans.  At least two recipients will be from each region of the Commonwealth in order to encourage equity in health care staffing levels in every region of the state.

Throughout the last year, we have not only witnessed the resilience of our frontline workers, but the passion and commitment it takes to be a nurse.  When Senator Brooks' mother passed away years ago, the compassion and skill of the nurses who cared for her was something she will never forget, and is something that every patient deserves as they confront injury and illness.  As a nurse herself, Senator Collett has firsthand experience caring for patients and their families in all different times of need.

Today, as we emerge from this lingering pandemic, we remain in the midst of a massive health care worker shortage and must do all that we can to keep our nurses in Pennsylvania.  It is our hope that, in establishing this program, it will strengthen Pennsylvania’s ability to compete in attracting and retaining those in the nursing profession.
