Subject: | Resolution Recognizing April 24 as "Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day" |
I am planning to introduce a resolution reaffirming April 24, 2021 as Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day in memory of the victims of the Armenian Genocide, and in honor of the survivors and their descendants. On April 24, 1915, the Ottoman Empire began its systematic extermination of Armenian people, a minority group that had long been treated as second-class citizens. The Armenian Genocide began with the forced deportation and murder of hundreds of Armenian intellectuals and community leaders, and ended eight years later with the deaths of 1.5 million men, women, and children. It is considered the first genocide of the 20th century. The Commonwealth declared in 1965 that April 24 of each year will serve as a day of remembrance of the Armenian Genocide. By remembering and openly condemning the atrocities committed against the Armenian people, the Commonwealth has annually reaffirmed the need for constant vigilance to prevent similar atrocities in the future. Similar resolutions have already been passed by other states, cities, and towns across the country. Today and every day, let us recommit ourselves to making certain that we never forget the Armenian Genocide, and that we always speak out against hatred and atrocities anywhere they occur. |
